Willie Thomas Moon, Sr., age 90, of Athens, GA, passed October 25, 2022.

Funeral services Celebrating the Life of Willie Thomas Moon, Sr. will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, October 28, 2022 at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 96 MLK JR Drive, Commerce, GA, Eulogist, Rev. D.R. Brown, with interment to follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, Athens, GA.

Visitation, Thursday 2-6PM at the funeral home.

Willie Thomas Moon, Sr. was born on January 18, 1932, to the late Mr. Albert and Mrs. Allie Long Moon in Commerce, Georgia.

He served his country during the Korean Conflict as a soldier in the United States Army, meriting him the Purple Heart, awarded to soldiers wounded in battle. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked as a brick mason for the Department of Transportation. He served as an officer with the Commerce Police Department and ended his work career as a mechanic with Kendle in Athens, Georgia.

Willie joined Mt. Calvary Missionary Church at an early age and remained a steadfast member until his health declined. He formerly served on the treasury board and served on the deacon board for more than 50 years.

Willie loved rabbits. It’s believed that was his motive for learning to hunt. He also loved to garden, whereas he spent many hours sitting under a spreading pecan tree with his good friends as they watched him weed his tomato plants.

Willie, the oldest of 4 children, was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph Moon and Rudolph Moon. He is survived by one sister, Rena Tolbert. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Annie Mae Moon and presently married to Mrs. Joan Linston Moon, where they reside in Athens, Georgia.

Willie Thomas Moon Sr. is the father of two daughters, Evelyn Brightwell (Earnest) and Cynthia Moon; three sons, Timothy Moon (Ann), Ronald Moon (Jennie), Willie Moon Jr. (Hattie), and stepson, Dedric Thomas (Shureck). He is a proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren of which two of the grandchildren were raised in his home, Ronshekia Moon and Michael Moon, other grandchildren include, Arielle Thomas, Cassandra Moon, Ronald Hylton (Lisa), Melesa Moon Browner , Lacretia Moon, Brandon Mapp, Laporsha Moon, Laterrca Moon, Ronald King, Timothy Moon Jr., Brianna Moon and Tristen Jackson. He is the great-grandfather of 31 great-grandchildren, 10 great great-grandchildren, and hosts of nieces and nephews.
